Probably not everybody can see a connection between the words ‘industry’ and ‘charm’. However, this is indeed true of many places in the Czech Republic. The formation of the Republic was accompanied by the need to overcome the decline caused by war, and the pace as well as the inventiveness with which the production took off is breathtaking. The textile, glass, and footwear industries were among the most advanced in the world. The same was true of the Czechoslovak armaments industry. The prosperity of Czech companies was permeated with stories. For example, the shoemaker Baťa, who literally “shod the world” and gave jobs to tens of thousands of people. Or the story of the Škoda brand. Its position before the war was unshakable, but the demand for weapons ebbed. Škoda took this as an inspiration for a new expansion – it started producing locomotives and cars (at first steam, then electric), later also aircraft, trolleybuses and bridges, even the first fully-welded bridge in the world.
