5 MAP Komenského square 8 and Solniční street 17 The Beseda House and the adjacent Slavia Hotel were the centres of cultural life of Brno's Czech residents and it is no wonder that these places were important for Janáček too. Many clubs used to meet there, particularly the Beseda brněnská Club. The Beseda House was built in the years 1870–1873 according to the design of architect Theophil von Hansen and became the cultural and social centre of Czech residents of Brno. The building in the Neo-Renaissance style served as the seat of Czech clubs, of which the most important was the Beseda brněnská. Leoš Janáček was its choirmaster and performed at the club concerts also as a pianist and especially as the conductor of large musical productions. Janáček's daughter Olga also performed at club events. The Beseda House was also the venue of premieres of a number of Janáček's songs. The tragic event, when young worker František Pavlík was killed by the gendarmerie near the Beseda House during a demonstration for the establishment of a Czech university, inspired Janáček to write his piano sonata 1. X. 1905 “From the Street”. Today, the building houses the Brno Philharmonic Orchestra. The Slavia Hotel, which was the centre of Czech cultural events, is located just across the street. It was the meeting place of important Brno personalities, and Leoš Janáček was a regular visitor. Hotel Slavia was also a venue for reading sessions of the Russian Circle of which Janáček was a co-founder and enthusiastic member.
