Liberecký kraj Bezděz Bezděz castle was founded by King Přemysl Ottokar II. In 1264 and is one of the most important Czech medieval sites. In the middle ages it was used to hold prisoner the penultimate ruler from the Přemyslid dynasty Václav II., in the Baroque era it was a Benedictine monastery and was a destination for many pious pilgrims and in the 19th century the now abandoned Bezděz was irresistible to the Romantics, including an infl uential Czech poet and writer Karel Hynek Mácha. Today, visitors can see the royal palace and chapel, the burgrave and the templar palace and other parts of the castle. The Big Tower with its Knights’ Hall is also accessible and provides wonderful views of the surrounding landscape – the nearby Mácha’s lake or the Ještěd Mountain and on a clear day even the peaks of the Giant Mountains can be visible from Bezděz castle. +420 487 873 131 bezdez@npu.cz www.hrad-bezdez.eu
