The Plzeň town hall is a literal jewel of the Renaissance, as is the beautiful building of the JK Tyl Theatre, which was constructed in the neo-Renaissance style. Tourists are attracted by the historical Plzeň underground, which enables you to walk through a labyrinth of corridors, cellars and wells from the 14th century to reveal the secrets of the town and the lives of its inhabitants in the Middle Ages. Uniquely renovated interiors, designed for rich Plzeň citizens by the world-renowned architect Adolf Loos, are also opened for visitors. In the southern part of the Plzeň region you will find two baroque jewels. The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in Přeštice, which was designed by Kilian Ignaz Dientzenhofer, and the Church of St. Vitus in Dobřany with a unique double-sided altar. The St. Peter and St. Paul rotunda, the oldest preserved church monument in the Plzeň region, can be found in Starý Plzeňec. In Chotěšov you can visit a former Premonstratensian monastery from the 13th century, and you can visit the former Šternberk Château Zelená Hora, where the Manuscript of Zelená Hora was found in 1817 near Nepomuk. The Cistercian monastery in the town of Plasy in the northern part of the Plzeň region from 1144 is also worth a visit. It was built on a completely unique water foundation, with more than five thousand oak pillars used in its construction. Also of note is the local provostery, which is the residence of the Museum and Gallery of the Northern Plzeň region. The White Unicorn Baroque apothecary, unique catacombs, a majestic Jesuit church and other interesting sights are the pride of the royal town of Klatovy. You can visit the second largest riding hall in Central Europe in Světice in the Tachov region. The reconstruction of the Kladruby monastery, which you can visit near the town of Stříbro, is a masterpiece of the builder Jan Santini Aichel. The new convent of the Kladruby monastery was built by the no less renowned builder Kilian Ignaz Dientzenhofer. Our tip: Chotěšov monastery The 13th century Premonstratensian monastery towers majestically above the Radbuza River. The extensive monastery complex is undergoing a gradual reconstruction and tourists can enjoy guided tours and various cultural events during the season. The monastery has often been selected by filmmakers as the perfect location to shoot scenes from movies including The Joke, Bad Company and 3 Seasons in Hell.
