A region of good food Beer rules over the Plzeň region, and this is valid for local cooking as well. It is used for making a whole variety of dishes. Just imagine a delicious goulash with tender meat that falls apart. It is even better in this region as beer is added. Various types of meat roasted in what is called “a goldish beverage” are also outstanding. The meals come with different types of dumplings, e.g. dumplings with bacon or “glass-blowers’ dumplings” containing cream and cabbage. Křimice cabbage is highly-renowned, as this sauerkraut has been trodden for more than a hundred years in the Plzeň region. Potato-based dishes are typical for the Plzeň region. They are also widely used in the specific cuisine of the Chodsko region. The traditional potato pancakes are called “vošouchy” here. “Hluchec”, “toč” and “báč” are still more dishes made from potatoes. Housewives made these meals sweet, salty or in numerous other ways in Chodsko and other parts of the region. Family recipes are handed down from generation to generation, thus you can still taste these delicacies today. Local ingredients are used for cooking in the Bohemian Forest – the mushrooms picked in local forests, trout from clean brooks and excellent game and meat. You will surely come to like the Bohemian Forest’s thick potato soup with mushrooms, as well as the local trout prepared with butter. And we cannot forget the sweet meals – fruit-filled dumplings or an apple strudel. Sweet “hnětynky” are still made according to original recipes in the Prácheňsko region. By tradition they were given by girls to boys in public houses during feasts. However, Czech kolache (from Chodsko) have won the Plzeň region the greatest reputation. The design of kolache with poppy seeds, quark and powidl (plum jam) richly decorated with beautiful ornaments vary depending on the particular Chodsko area they come from. Some extraordinary food products and dishes of the region can pride themselves on the “Regional food product” title. These are the highest quality products made locally using local ingredients. Our tip: There are many well-known restaurants in the region. Don’t forget to visit the biggest beer houses – the “Na Spilce” Pilsner restaurant, or the “Na Parkáně” pub, where you can primarily taste specialities made from beer. Try the Chodsko cuisine in the “U Meluzíny” pub in Domažlice. Visiting the “Ve Skále” restaurant in Chodová Planá is a great gastronomical experience. The restaurant is dug into granite rocks and offers excellent cuisine. i map menu www
