Nature in the Plzeň region will enchant you. A strict nature protection regime is in force in the Bohemian Forest National Park, which extends to the neighbouring South Bohemian region and is the largest national park in Bohemia. Another area of the Bohemian Forest is a Protected Landscape Area. In the Bohemian Forest you can find very rare mountain spruce groves, primeval forest covers and beautiful glacial lakes. Outings to the lakes have been attracting tourists since time immemorial. You should not miss Black Lake and the Devil’s Lake or the White Gorge waterfall near the village of Hamry, which is the highest waterfall on the Czech side of the Bohemian Forest. Walk along the unique Vchynice-Tetov floating channel. The unique Rechle gate bridge, where the educational trail along the channel begins, already deserves admiration. You will be further enthused by a walk along the Vydra River, the most beautiful river in the Bohemian Forest, with its so called Giant Pots, pits in granite boulders, rapids and cascades. The Bohemian Forest Protected Landscape Area and the Bohemian Forest National Park, together with the adjacent Bavarian Forest National Park, form the largest continuous forested complex in Europe known as “the Green Roof of Europe”. A section of the Upper Palatine Forest mountain range in close proximity to Čerchov Mountain in the Domažlice region is also a Protected Landscape Area. It is adorned with rare forest covers and vast beech forests. You will want to return to this region of picturesque hamlets. Peace and tranquillity still rule here, and the atmosphere of virgin nature is complimented by dozens of extinct villages, ruins which nature and gigantic memorable trees slowly began reclaiming in times long past. Beautiful nature can also be found in many other places – the Horní Střela Natural Park with a deep canyon of the Střela River in the Northern Plzeň Region, Odlezly Lake, the youngest lake in Bohemia, and Hromnice Lake. The American Garden in the Klatovy region, not far from the market town of Chudenice, is definitely worth a visit. It was even declared a National Natural Monument. Even unique natural places, such as the Luft Garden, with its exotic and rare woody plants, and the Meditation Garden, which is an exceptional oasis of peace and relaxation, can be found in the West Bohemian metropolis. Our tip: Bohemian Forest fens One of the symbols of the Bohemian Forest are peat bogs, or the so called Bohemian Forest Fens. You can find them on the border of the Plzeň and South Bohemian regions. Only some of them are accessible (Tříjezerní fen, Jezerní fen, Chalupská fen), others are located in the first zone of the Bohemian Forest National Park. Romantic, charming, peaceful, such are the fens in the Bohemian Forest. A visit to this area of the Bohemian Forest will be a great experience.
