Exhibitors are not only inspired by stories of famous natives including Jiří Trnka, Ladislav Sutnar, and Gottfried Lindauer, but also by stories of other European giants. The oldest collection of firearms in Europe found its home in the museum of West Bohemia. More than seventy thousand artefacts in the National History Museum of the Plzeň Region illustrate life in the Plzeň region from the Middle Ages to the present day. The Gallery of West Bohemia in Plzeň uses a unique building of a former mediaeval market hall called Masné Krámy for interesting exhibitions. Painted artworks are also exhibited throughout the year by the Klenová Gallery in Klatovy. Individual areas of the Plzeň region and their historical development can be discovered in a number of museums, such as the Museum and Gallery of the Northern Plzeň Region in Mariánská Týnice, the Museum of the Upper Palatine Forest in Tachov, and the Museum of Dr Bohuslav Horák in Rokycany. The Museum of the Chodsko Region simultaneously shows this unique region from several perspectives. The Dr Hostaš Museum of National History and Science and the unique Baroque White Unicorn apothecary are certainly worth a visit. An understanding of glassblowing in the Bohemian Forest can be gained at museums in Železná Ruda, Kašperské Hory and Sušice. You can also find an absolutely unique mechanical Christmas crib, on which local woodcarvers spent more than four thousand hours during its production, there. Interesting archaeological collections are exhibited by the Museum of the Southern Plzeň Region in Blovice. The museum in Koloveč in the Domažlice region focuses on craftsmanship. The history of the blacksmith’s craft can be discovered in the unique water-powered mill in Dobřív in the Rokycany region, which is also a technical monument. If you are interested in the war years and military technology, you should definitely visit the Plzeň Patton Memorial and the Museum on the Demarcation Line in Rokycany. Trains, motorbikes, bicycles and other means of transport are simultaneously presented at several museums in the region, including in Chlumčany, Kašperské Hory, Oselce and Bezdružice. The Mini-Museum of Scales and Balances, which displays more than fifty exhibits in an area of less than 5 m2 to make it the smallest museum in the Czech Republic, is also located in the Plzeň region. Plzeň’s valuable architectural wealth is further represented by premises designed by world renowned architect Adolf Loos. These unique reconstructed interiors are open to the public.
