It is the fourth greatest city in the Czech Republic, a metropolis with an industrial, brewery and cultural tradition. It can also boast the tallest church tower in the Czech Republic, the third largest synagogue in Europe and the title of the European Capital of Culture 2015. Klatovy, with many historical sights and unique Jesuit catacombs, is called the Gate to the Bohemian Forest. Sušice, on the Otava River, is another town of the Klatovy district worth visiting. One of the oldest West Bohemian settlements is the town of Tachov, lying 15 kilometres from the border with Germany. The city walls are a real treasure – they are the best-preserved city walls in the Czech Republic. Another old-world town in the Tachov district is the mining town of Stříbro with its beautiful Renaissance town hall. Domažlice, with its leaning tower on the main square, is the traditional heart of the Chodsko region. The tower of the arch-deanery church has a lean of 60 centimetres from its vertical axis and is very popular with tourists. The town of Rokycany is set into a glorious basin at the foothills of the Brdy Hills. Manětín, with the beautiful château, and Plasy. with the extensive Cistercian monastery. lay in the north of the Plzeň Region. The interesting town of Přeštice, with the marvellous Baroque Church of the Assumption of Our Lady, is located south of Plzeň. It also became famous for breeding an original Czech pig breed. Nepomuk, the home town of Saint John of Nepomuk, further counts among popular tourists’ destinations. When wandering through the Bohemian Forest, be sure to visit Kašperské Hory and its lovely historical centre and numerous museums. The starting point for tourists in the Bohemian Forest is Železná Ruda, close to the border with Bavaria. Our tip: Be sure to visit Rabštejn nad Střelou, the smallest Czech historical town, located in the middle of woods in the Horní Střela nature park.
