The European Route of Historic Theatres (ERHT) Severská cesta Lamanšská cesta Baltická cesta Německá cesta Černomořská cesta Francouzská cesta Císařská cesta Alpská cesta Italská cesta Jadranská cesta Iberijská cesta Kavalírská cesta Everywhere in Europe theatre buildings can be found. They are meeting places, venues for the arts and for entertainment, for discussing the present, the past and the future. Theatre buildings are an expression of the society for which they were built and of the changes in society. Together, the theatre buildings in Europe embody 2500 years of European history – since Greek antiquity, when the first theatres were built. To make this outstanding European cultural heritage better known and accessible, the 120 most beautiful, most interesting and best preserved historic theatres from the Renaissance to the beginning of the 20th century are being selected and connected on a cultural tourism route: the European Route of Historic Theatres (ERHT). All theatres on this route can be visited as monuments during the day, outside performances. The European Route of Historic Theatres is divided into 12 part routes. Each part route connects up to 12 theatres that can be visited easily in about a week. But it is also possible to see just one or select two or three e.g. for a week-end trip. The part routes are: Iberia Route (Portugal, Spain), French Route, Channel Route / Visit Theatres (UK, Belgium, Netherlands), German Route, Nordic Route (Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland), Baltic Route (Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia), Black Sea Route (Russia, Ukraine, Romania, Bulgaria), Adriatic Route (Montenegro, Serbia, Bosnia, Croatia, Slovenia), Emperor Route (Austria, Czech Republic), Alpine Route (southern Germany, Switzerland, Italy), Italian Route (northern Italy), Grand Tour Route (southern Italy, Malta). More information on www.historic-theatres-route.eu Furthermore, a freely accessible online database collects information on the more than 3000 historic theatres in Europe (www.theatre-architecture.eu); a touring exhibition, entitled “The history of Europe – told by its theatres”, is travelling around Europe in 2015, 2016 and 2017; conferences and workshops serve as a platform for exchange of knowledge and experience among the representatives of theatres, cities and institutions involved in ERHT. The European Route of Historic Theatres is organized by the non-profit PERSPECTIV – Association of Historic Theatres in Europe and fifteen partners in twelve countries. The Emperor Route to historic theatres in Austria and the Czech Republic, with future extensions in Hungary and Slovakia, is managed by ATI Arts Theatre Institute in Prague. The entire project is supported by the Culture Programme of the European Union. PERSPECTIV – Association of Historic Theatres in Europe – is the coordinator of the European Route of Historic Theatres. The non-profit association connects people across Europe who are responsible for historic theatre buildings or who otherwise have a professional or private interest in this topic. Together they support the preservation, restoration, and adequate use of as well as research into this outstanding common European heritage. More information: www.perspectiv-online.org
