The façades and gables are decorated with sgraffito embellishments of which there are over eight thousand on the entire building. Even at the time they were first created, the rule was in place that the individual motifs could not be repeated on any of the decorations. The guided tours present the stylishly decorated interiors, redone once during the Baroque period and then again sometime after the end of the 18th century. The Castle Theatre is unique due to its well-preserved sets of scenery. An abundance of both historical as well as contemporary architecture can be found throughout the town of Litomyšl. Thanks to its quiet and friendly atmosphere, it was declared the first Czech “Spa for the Spirit” in 2012. The historical main square, with preserved arcades along two sides, is joined to the castle by the Monastery Gardens, a landscaped area with a gazebo and onsite café. The Municipal Gallery in the unique At the House of the Knights (U Rytířů) on the main square, the Portmoneum with its original wall paintings and dedicated to the work of the graphic artist and writer Josef Váchal, and the Regional Museum that has received many awards for its reconstruction completed in 2014 are all sites that should not to be missed during a visit to Litomyšl.
