Both of the most famous Viennese theatres – the State Opera (1869) and the Burgtheater (1888) – boast elaborately decorated façades, stairways and foyers dating back to the 19th century, while their auditoriums were modified in the 1950s. The Ronacher (1872), now a music theatre, and the Volkstheater (1889) which today focuses on drama, were built by the well-known Austrian architects Ferdinand Fellner and Hermana Helmer. Unfortunately, the oldest Austrian theatre, Maria Theresa’s palace theatre in the Schönbrunn Palace (1747/1767) is not accessible to the public. The Raimund Theater (1893) produces primarily musicals, while the Volksoper (1898) and Theater an der Wien are known for operas and operettas. And the Theatre Museum, located just behind the State Opera, is awaiting a visit. Other places worth visiting in the vicinity of the Theater an der Wien include the preserved Burgtheater scenery storage building by Gottfried Semper (1877) and the Secession Exhibition Pavilion by Joseph Maria Olbrich (1897).
