Weitra A gallery with three boxes is built against the rear wall. It is accessed by a staircase leading from the neighboring hall. The box interiors are lined with red cloth wallpaper. The auditorium is decorated with elaborate historical decorations, partially of stucco and partially of gilded wood. The doors located on the right side of the hall, across from the entrance, are false doors, placed here simply in order to provide symmetry. This section of the exterior wall of the palace also featured a latrine, which was later walled over and has only recently been rediscovered. The theatre auditorium is small and simply designed. It comes across as an impressive space primarily thanks to the elaborate stucco and painted decorations. The theatre’s antechamber, which serves as a foyer during concerts and other performances, contains an exhibition of copies of 19th century theatre programs. An unusually large drum in the fly loft most certainly was used to control the changing of scenery, however its precise function is not clear. Smaller drums have also been preserved in several locations on the stage. As is the case with the large drum in the fly loft, their exact function is not yet known. Some of the original pulleys used to pull up the scenery have been preserved on the fly loft ceiling, which was unfortunately separated from the stage by a concrete partition in the 1980s, Technology When strolling along the covered arched walkways, it is possible to not only see the chateau’s architecture, but some of the original benches from the chateau theatre are on view, some even with folding seats. Nowadays, the chateau courtyard is used for many cultural; events during the summer months. Atypically shaped sunshades provide protection against both sun and rain. The Baroque gables were not added to the Renaissance chateau until the 18th century. Their placement does not take into account the way the windows are distributed on the lower stories. The chateau buildings are surrounded by a rectangular courtyard on four sides in a manner typical for chateaus in the 16th century. Partially covered arcades are located on the two shorter sides, another characteristic feature of that period. The chateau is spread over a promontory that made it possible to monitor the surrounding area. This was one of the reasons why the original castle was built here in the 13th century. Exterior
