OBJECTS Ornament Alphonse Mucha (1860–1939) Design for a chaise-longue, candlestick and stands, c. 1900 Pastels on paper; 44.6 x 31.7 cm Like some other designs by Mucha for jewellery and decorative objects, this preparatory drawing was published in modified form in his Documents décoratifs style book, issued by Emil Lévy in Paris in 1902. There are plates in different stages of completion – from sketches to final, precise drawings – in private and state collections around the world (especially the Musée d’Orsay in Paris). The chaise longue in this design is similar to one of the drawings from the furniture set that Alphonse Mucha designed for Foquet, a Parisian goldsmith. However, the chaise-longue drawing is missing from the final-version plate (No. 68) in Documents décoratifs.
