Art Associations and the Visual Style Artists Producers Arnošt Hofbauer (1869–1944) Czech painter and graphic artist Arnošt Hofbauer was a founding member of the Mánes Fine Artists’ Association, and contributed to the editing of the Association’s magazine, Volné směry. He devoted himself to poster production starting in 1897, and his best works emerged in connection with the Mánes Association (for its 1st and 2nd exhibitions in 1898 and for its 13th exhibition in 1904). Gustav Klimt (1862–1918) Austrian painter and decorator of architecture Gustav Klimt was a key founding personality of the Vienna Secession artistic group and the author of a range of important painted decorations of architecture including the Secession Pavilion in Vienna. At the 1900 Paris World’s Fair, he received a gold medal for his painting Philosophy for the University of Vienna. His popular success was ensured primarily by his portrait painting. Alphonse Mucha (1860–1939) Alphonse Mucha was a Czech painter, graphic artist, illustrator and decorative designer. In 1894, he designed the first poster of the later celebrated series for actress Sarah Bernhardt. He collaborated with Parisian printer F. Champenois, in whose facilities his works were printed. For the 1900 Paris World's Fair, he decorated the Bosnia and Herzegovina Pavilion with paintings. Mucha’s portfolios of decorative plates Documents décoratifs (1902) and Figures décoratives (1905), intended for art practitioners and art school students, are fundamental works of Art Nouveau ornament. Koloman Moser (1868–1918) Designer and painter Koloman Moser was one of the founders of the Vienna Secession artistic group and the Wiener Werkstätte, a production community of visual artists and designers. He participated in preparing the Vienna Secession’s magazine, Ver Sacrum, and the movement’s posters. For the Wiener Werkstätte, he designed jewellery, utility articles, furniture and interior textiles. Vojtěch Preissig (1873–1944) Czech graphic artist and painter Vojtěch Preissig was a member of the Mánes Fine Artists’ Association. He was active in Paris between 1898 and 1902, briefly in Alphonse Mucha’s studio. He worked for the magazines L’Art décoratif, Frou-Frou and L’Assiette au beurre. A significant personality of modern Czech graphic art, book art and typography, Preissig was involved in the Czech resistance during both world wars.
