OBJECTS Art Nouveau Fashion Ball gown with tunic, 1912–1913 L. H. Laufer, k.u.k. Hoflieferant, Wien Silk satin and chiffon, machine-made lace, lamella and glass-bead embroidery, fur hem; length 155–230 cm After 1910, the high-waist cut, a tunic and the use of light, airy silk, tulle and lace materials, as well as the princess sheath cut dresses made of heavier velvet and brocade fabrics gave the new evening gown silhouette an elegant, relaxed and natural appearance. The fascination with visually-striking gold fabrics and gold paillette or gold-thread embroidery attests to the inspiration by Orientalism and the enchantment with the theatrical world – the way these were perceived by Paul Poiret and other French fashion designers.
