OBJECTS Metamorphoses of Nature: Organic Morphology Byzantine Girl panneau, c. 1900 Alphonse Mucha (1860–1939) Manufacturer unknown Velvet, multi-coloured, hand-printed fabric; 70 x 89 cm These textile pictures were printed after Mucha’s lithographs in numerous samples and various colour and fabric versions. The items were intended for household interior decoration. Mucha may have created three designs for textile panneaus, entitled Girl with a Daisy, Byzantine Girl and Language of Flowers. The third design was probably never executed in fabric. A 1900 advertisement for pillows from Orendi, a Viennese carpet-manufacturing firm, gives an example of their use: it depicts a girl with a flower – a motif that is also featured on two textile pieces in the Museum of Decorative Arts’ holdings.
