OBJECTS Art Nouveau Fashion Cami-knickers, 1900–1910 Bohemia Batiste, machine-made lace; length 114 cm The change in the type of underwear was an important part of clothing reform, and also of the new fashion trends after 1906. For lighter undergarments, gentler materials were now preferred in place of cloth, such as batiste, cambric and silk, and new kinds of lingerie were produced that served more than one purpose. The attachment of a shirt to a petticoat resulted in the combination, trousers and a shirt produced cami-knickers, and underpants and an underskirt created a pantalon jupon. Knickers that had not been fully joined in the central seam were now altered into reformist knickers that were sewn in the middle and had slits in the side seams.
