OBJECTS Metamorphoses of Nature: Organic Morphology Champagne glass, c. 1901 Harrach glassworks, Nový Svět (Neuwelt) Colourless glass, violet shaded inside from bottom up, engraved, gilded; height 14.3 cm Founded around 1700, the Harrach glassworks in Neuwelt in the Giant Mountains (Riesengebirge) played an important role in the production of Art Nouveau glass in Bohemia. In 1898, the company introduced the Moravia edition typified by coloured glass filaments delicately wrapped around the glass body. The works’ hot-forming techniques included glassware decorated with inclusions of coloured glass in the form of stylized flowers (mainly peonies and roses), manufactured in the Florida, Cordé, Hekla and Pompeja series. The Neuwelt glassworks also earned high acclaim for its cold-decoration techniques of glass painting, carving and cutting that were often combined. Like Johann Lötz Witwe, the Harrach glassworks also collaborated with prominent glass designers.
