OBJECTS Art Associations and the Visual Style Alphonse Mucha (1860–1939) Cover for La Plume, 1897 Colour lithograph on paper; 25 x 18 cm Founded by the poet and novelist Léon Deschamps in 1889, the La Plume monthly was a progressive, yet pluralist journal of the Parisian literary and artistic scene. The art review was devoted chiefly to literature and philosophy, covering visual arts in connection with exhibitions that it organised – initially as the Salon de la Plume and later as the Salon des Cent. The magazine published a monographic issue devoted to the successful exhibition of Mucha’s works at the Salon des Cent. Mucha contributed regularly to the magazine and was one of the Salon’s main artists; further monographic issues of La Plume were also devoted to Mucha.
