OBJECTS Geometry Deer, 1908 Vratislav Hugo Brunner (1886–1928), design Manufactured by the Hořice Toymaking Cooperative Turned wood, carved, painted; height 10 cm, width 8 cm Vratislav Hugo Brunner was one of the founding members of Artěl and a painter, graphic artist, illustrator and typographer. As early as 1908, he began to create artistic designs of gingerbread and toys. One of his best-known toy creations of that period is the wooden figure of “a leaping deer” that manifests a high degree of stylisation, a combination of planar elements and the application of hand-painted geometric decoration. Thus came into being a decorative artefact that is something between a toy and a small keepsake. Its motif became popular in the Artěl milieu and was employed by Pavel Janák for the art association’s first logo.
