OBJECTS Art Associations and the Visual Style Arnošt Hofbauer (1869–1944) First exhibition of the Mánes Artists’ Association, 1898 Colour lithograph on paper; 109 x 83 cm Inspired by many foreign artists’ groups and associations, Mánes promoted its exhibitions in posters, with in-house competitions being announced for them. Arnošt Hofbauer designed the posters for the first two exhibitions held at the Topičův salon in 1898 (the design for the first exhibition was made in 1897). Posters for the following art showings were produced chiefly by Vladimír Županský, who designed four posters (the most important one promoting a Rodin exhibition), Jan Preisler, Max Švabinský and Karel Špillar. The Symbolist content of the initial posters gradually disappeared under the belated influence of the Vienna Secession and with the arrival of the younger generation of artists (František Kysela, Jaroslav Benda, Jaroslav Rössler).
