OBJECTS Interiors and the Art of Furniture Design Fragment of interior fabric, early 20th century Designer and origin unknown, Europe Wool, Jacquard weave; 68 x 31 cm The Museum of Decorative Arts in Prague acquired a large number of fragments of interior fabrics in 1961 via a transfer from the School of Applied Arts in Prague. This collection was assembled by Professor Julius Ambrus for his students. Ambrus began his professional career as an inspector of drawing at Austrian textile schools; in 1886, he was hired by Prague‘s School of Applied Arts as an art teacher. He made a great many designs that were implemented by the weaving schools in Šumperk, Lanškroun and Nový Jičín. The floral patterns on upholstery, draperies, wall papers, rugs and carpets designed in Ambrus’s studio were eclectic reflections of the Art Nouveau ornamentation and the colour schemes featured on textiles produced in European design centres.
