Leopold Bauer (1872–1938)

Architect and designer Leopold Bauer was a student of Otto Wagner at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna. He was among Wagner’s most talented students from the Bohemian lands (in Bauer’s case, Silesia). Bauer also realised a range of buildings in Silesia, villas in Krnov and Brno, the building of the Priessnitz Sanatorium in Lázně Jeseník, and later the Breda department store in Opava.

Jaroslav Benda (1882–1970)

Jaroslav Benda was a Czech book designer and typographer. He graduated in architecture from the School of Applied Arts and the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague. After 1905, he was a representative of geometricising Art Nouveau, and in this spirit he created a range of book covers and decorative wallpaper designs, bookbinding papers, typefaces and logos, which he applied within the Artěl art association.

Vratislav Hugo Brunner

(1886–1928)

Vratislav Hugo Brunner was a Czech painter, graphic artist and typographer. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague, and was a professor at the School of Applied Arts; he was also one of the co-founders of the Artěl association. The focus of his work consisted mainly of book art, and from the turn of the century he developed decorative style in the area of embellishing elements combining geometric and ornamental motifs. In addition to book illustration, he also devoted himself to the production of bookplates, posters and toys.

Josef Hoffmann (1870–1956)

Brtnice native Josef Hoffmann (1870–1956) was a prominent Austrian architect and industrial artist. He graduated from the state industrial school in Brno and the Academy in Vienna (studio of Karl von Hasenauer and Otto Wagner). From 1899, he was a professor of architecture at the School of Applied Arts in Vienna. In 1903, he founded the Wiener Werkstätte, a production community of visual artists and designers, with Koloman Moser and Fritz Waerndorfer. After Otto Wagner’s death, Hoffmann was considered the most prominent Austrian architect of his time.

Pavel Janák (1882–1956)

Pavel Janák was a Czech architect, urbanist, designer, theoretician, educator, and a key personality of the Czech artistic scene in the first half of the 20th century. From 1899, he studied at the Czech Polytechnic, briefly also at the German Polytechnic, and 1906–1907 at the Vienna Academy under Professor Otto Wagner. After returning from Vienna, he asserted formatively reductive and geometric tendencies in applied art which stood at the inception of his multi-layered artistic activities. In the pre-war era, he co-founded artistic groups of fundamental significance (the Artěl association, the Group of Fine Artists, the Prague Artistic Workshops and the Union for Bohemian Artwork).

Marie Křivánková (1883–1936)

Jewellery designer Marie Křivánková began her professional career at the Max Schober company, one of Prague’s largest jewellery manufacturers, which gained notoriety in the initial years of the 20th century through its Bohemian garnet jewellery in neo-Empire style. Shortly thereafter, Marie Křivánková’s designs enriched the production of the Schober factory with linearly conceived works based on geometric order. The basic elements of gold perforated jewellery were often spirals of irregular filigree, grains imitating the venerable technique of granulation, and fine chains ending in pieces of nacre. Marie Křivánková continued producing jewellery of this type even after the First World War, then under the banner of her own company. The influence of the “à la Křivánková” style persisted in Czech jewellery at least into the 1920s.

Charles Rennie Mackintosh

(1868–1928)

Charles Rennie Mackintosh was a prominent Scottish architect and designer, pioneer of European Art Nouveau, and founder of The Glasgow Four. His design work combines influences of the Far East (Japan), European symbolism and inspirations of Celtic ornamentation. Mackintosh’s conception of geometric Art Nouveau influenced members of the Vienna Secession and the Wiener Werkstätte.

Alfred Roller (1864–1935)

Painter, graphic artist and set designer Alfred Roller was one of the founders of the Vienna Secession artistic group, and in 1902 he was its chairman. His posters for the Vienna Secession are among the most expressive, and he participated significantly in preparing its magazine, Ver Sacrum. After the success of his set design for Wagner’s opera Tristan and Isolda, he became the set designer of the Vienna Opera.

Max rytíř Spaun (1827–1897)

Already in the late 19th century, the new owner of the Lötz glassworks in Klášterský Mlýn (Klostermühle) in the Bohemian Forest, Max Ritter von Spaun, established very productive collaborations with prominent artists of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy and realised their designs in the glassworks. These included Viennese artists Josef Hoffmann, Koloman Moser and Jutta Sika, and painter and designer Marie Kirschner, who lived in Berlin.

Argentor

Between 1902 and 1970, the Austrian company Argentor produced dining cutlery, table vessels, candlesticks, clock cases, mirror frames and other objects of everyday use, including designs by artists working for the Wiener Werkstätte, a production community of visual artists and designers. It presented its products at exhibitions of decorative arts.
