OBJECTS Interiors and the Art of Furniture Design Gustav Siegel (1880–1968) Chaise longue, after 1900 Manufactured by Jacob and Joseph Kohn, Vienna Beech, dark-stained, bentwood, brass, textile; 74 x 72 x 183 cm Gustav Siegel worked for J. J. Kohn, a bentwood furniture company that initially operated in Vsetín, Moravia and later relocated to Cieszyn, Krakow and Nowo-Radomsk in Poland. As the firm’s art director, Siegel authored a great many furniture designs in the early Art Nouveau period, as well as promotional materials and company catalogues. He also created the factory’s furniture installation for the Paris World’s Fair in 1900. Besides Siegel, Josef Hoffmann (Siegel’s teacher from the School of Decorative Arts in Vienna, who recommended his talented student to the company) also produced a variety of designs for the firm.
