Josef Fanta (1856–1954)

Josef Fanta was a Czech architect, painter and educator. He graduated from the Czech Polytechnic in Prague, where from 1891 he was an assistant to Professor Josef Schulz and from 1890 a professor of architecture. After his studies, Fanta collaborated on major neo-Renaissance realisations in Prague (the National Theatre – J. Zítek, Wiehl House – A. Wiehl), and designed tenement houses independently, also in historicising style. He applied decorative Art Nouveau style in his paramount projects: the building of Prague’s Wilson Station (formerly Franz Josef Station, now Prague Main Station) and the Prague Hlahol. Fanta also participated in the preparation of major exhibitions, and designed furniture for residential and sacral interiors.

Jan Kotěra (1871–1923)

Jan Kotěra was a Czech architect, urbanist, designer, painter, graphic artist, theoretician, educator, and a founding personality of modern Czech architecture. He was a student of Otto Wagner at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, between 1898 and 1910 a professor of decorative architecture at the School of Applied Arts in Prague, and from 1911 a professor at the Prague Academy. After a brief period of lyricising style with floral décor, in the second half of the 20th century’s first decade he moved towards the strict style of pre-war Modernism (influenced by the works of H. P. Berlage, F. L. Wright and J. Hoffmann), acknowledging construction elements and materials, and suppressing décor (the city museum in Hradec Králové, the Leichter House and the Urbánek House in Prague, etc.).

Gustav Siegel (1880–1970)

Gustav Siegel was an Austrian furniture designer and a graduate of the School of Applied Arts in Vienna. On the recommendation of Josef Hoffmann, he was entrusted with the artistic direction of the company J. & J. Kohn, which produced bentwood furniture. Siegel designed a range of furniture models for the company, and was also the author of its exhibition at the 1900 World’s Fair in Paris.

Josef Gočár (1880–1945)

Josef Gočár was a Czech architect, urbanist, designer, educator and one of the leading personalities of modern Czech architecture, the paramount achievements of which include his realisations from the Cubist and Functionalist periods. Between 1903 and 1905, he was Jan Kotěra’s student at the School of Applied Arts in Prague and later collaborated with Kotěra’s studio. After the war, he became a professor at the Prague Academy. Gočár’s furnishings for the politician František Drtina, dating from 1908, are among the most progressive designs of Czech geometric Art Nouveau.

Rudolf Schlattauer (1860–1915)

Rudolf Schlattauer studied painting at the Vienna Academy under Professor Hans Makart, and received additional education in Paris, Berlin and Munich. He travelled to Scandinavia for health reasons, and became acquainted there with hand-woven tapestries which were created not only as aesthetic accessories for interiors but also as a result of efforts to preserve widespread domestic weaving. After his return to Moravia, Schlattauer dedicated himself fully to the establishment and operation of a manufactory producing hand-woven tapestries – initially in Zašová and later in Valašské Meziříčí. After several years of patriotic efforts on the part of the manufactory’s patriotic friends, state support was obtained to ensure its continued successful development.

Franta Anýž (1876–1934)

Franta Anýž was a Czech visual artist, founder, metal chaser, belt-maker, medallist and jeweller who significantly influenced the development of the artistic craft in the area of metalworking. After an apprenticeship at the Komárov Ironworks, Anýž studied at the School of Applied Arts in Prague (1892–1899) under Professors Celestýn (Celda) Klouček and Emanuel Novák. He began to do business in metalworking around 1900, and his company became one of the most prominent foundries in Bohemia.

Jan Kastner (1860–1912)

Jan Kastner was a carver, furniture designer and prominent purveyor of late Historicist and Art Nouveau decorative wood-carving in Bohemia. A graduate of the School of Applied Arts in Vienna, in 1888 he became a professor at the School of Applied Arts in Prague. In his work, he followed the wood-carving tradition of the historic epochs – he participated in the monumental commissions for sacral interiors (e.g. St Vitus Cathedral in Prague, the Church of St Ludmila in Prague’s Vinohrady district, the Church of St Barbara in Kutná Hora, the Deacon Church in Plzeň), and collaborated with architect Jan Kotěra on decorating the interior of Prague’s School of Applied Arts for the Paris World’s Fair in 1900.
