OBJECTS Poster Art and the Portrayal of Women in Advertising Alphonse Mucha (1860–1939) Job, 1896 Colour lithograph on paper; 58 x 48 cm This poster, advertising a brand of cigarette papers called JOB (acronym of Josef Bardou, the name of the company‘s owner), is perhaps Mucha‘s most successful ad of all, which was used in multiple versions, variations, formats and even languages long after 1900. A beautiful woman with golden tresses holds a smouldering, hand-rolled cigarette. The plastically modelled figure stands out against a monochrome background adorned with the repeated, stylised acronym of the brand name.
