OBJECTS Interiors and the Art of Furniture Design Josef Fanta (1856–1954) Furniture from the interior of the Prague Chamber of Trade and Commerce at the World’s Fair in Paris in 1900, 1900 Manufactured by Jan Navrátil, J. V. Spott (leather), Ludvík Wurzel, Prague (bronze) An assistant of Josef Schulz and a representative of the Czech Polytechnic, Josef Fanta stood for the more conservative faction of designers, together with his collaborators (Jan Koula, Vojtěch Sucharda and other artists). This is reflected in the final appearance of this interior shown at the Paris exhibition. Formally, the furniture designed by Josef Fanta still manifests the Historical Revival style – an elegant Neo-Classicism, albeit with Art Nouveau details in its hardware, textile embroideries and accessories. The interior is the work of Jan Navrátil’s furniture company, the J. V. Spott leather-manufacturing firm, and other makers.
