OBJECTS A Movement of the Soul Josef Váchal (1884–1969) Sursum. The 27th Exhibition of the Art Department of the Friends of the Arts’ Club in Brno, 1910 Colour linotype; 57 x 47 cm The renowned poster that promoted the first exhibition held by the Sursum artists’ association was confiscated by the censors (owing to the depiction of the youth’s genitalia); due to the exhibition’s scandalous content, the organiser’s government subsidy was withdrawn. The founding of the association was initiated by Jan Konůpek, Josef Váchal and František Kobliha – the youngest artists aligned with Meditace, the Catholic Modernist Artists’ review. An emphasis on spirituality and mysticism that opened new venues for graphic design characterises the work of the above-mentioned artists, as well as this poster featuring a figure of a nude young man-artist.
