OBJECTS Metamorphoses of Nature: Organic Morphology Jug, after 1900 Carl Knoll, Rybáře u Karlových Varů (Fischern bei Karlsbad) Porcelain painted with coloured lustre glaze, gilded; height 19 cm Experimenting with the iridescent effects of the technically demanding lustre glazes is a unique feat in Czech Art Nouveau ceramic production. The use of this glazing method in porcelain manufacture is even more surprising. The radical visual treatment of this pitcher alludes to the most outstanding aesthetic accomplishments of the Art Nouveau. The vessel’s basic morphology is transformed and “engulfed” by the dynamically modelled and plastically stylised foliage ornament. This art piece represents an extreme visual expression in the biomorphic current of Art Nouveau in Bohemian porcelain production.
