OBJECTS Metamorphoses of Nature: Organic Morphology Small vase, c. 1900 Émile Gallé glassworks, Nancy, France White opal glass with a green overlayer, acid-etched; height 9 cm In the 1890s, Gallé began producing glass on a mass scale. In order to simplify the production process, he replaced the method of cutting and engraving ornamental details with acid-etched decoration. Many of the types of glass presented at the 1900 International Exhibition in Paris showed a partial departure from hand-decorated glass. This shift was observed by Gustav E. Pazaurek as early as 1901 in his book Moderne Gläser, published in Leipzig. (Pazaurek was an art collector and director of the North Bohemian Museum in Liberec and later head of the art museum in Stuttgart).
