OBJECTS Poster Art and the Portrayal of Women in Advertising Viktor Oliva (1861–1928) The Golden Prague. Illustrated Weekly, 1898–1900 Colour lithograph on paper; 110 x 41 cm From 1884, Zlatá Praha (The Golden Prague), a magazine issued by the publisher Jan Otto, brought articles covering all spheres of life, science, culture, the arts, theatre and geography, which were complemented by narrative fiction presented in instalments and particularly by numerous illustrations. The images consisted of reproductions of Old Masters and contemporary painters, and from the 1890s also the latest illustrations by Viktor Oliva, Luděk Marold and other artists. Together with its earlier competitor, the Světozor pictorial magazine, “The Golden Prague” was modelled on the Parisian journal Illustration, but differed in its absence of politically-themed articles. This magazine released the first monographic article on poster art, authored by K. B. Mádl (1898).
