He becomes vice-chairman of the Nature Research Society and gives lecture on his experiments with hawkweed. He comes to Brno where he enters the Augustinian monastery and adopts the monastic name Gregor. He gives a lecture on his experiments in plant hybridization at the meeting of the Nature Research Society in Brno – the birth of modern genetics. He is appointed director of the Mortgage Bank of Moravia. He starts researching heredity – he carries out experiments on constancy of chosen traits in pea. According to some sources he made not less than 28 000 experiments by 1863. He studies natural sciences as well as experimental physics at the Vienna University which was of importance for his later experiments in plant hybridization. Mendel dies on 6 January and is buried at the Central Cemetery in Brno. The requiem was directed by Leoš Janáček. Mendel tries to hybridize dark domestic bees with the imported light variety of bees (Cyprus bees). Studies at the Philosophical Institute in Olomouc. He excelled especially in physics.
