The Moravian-Silesian Region was established together with the other 13 Czech regions on 1st January 2001, the region area is 5 427 km ² and consists of a total of 6 former districts (from the west Bruntál, Opava, Nový Jičín, Ostrava-city, Karviná and Frýdek-Místek) and 22 municipal districts with an extended competence. This region has 5 statutory cities, 35 towns, 3 townships and 256 villages. The status of the population of the region is around 1.2 million inhabitants. Despite its industiral tradition the region is also blessed with beautiful nature and, in addition to that, with natural healing resources. The metropolis of the region and simultaneously largest city Ostrava has over 300 000 inhabitants. The Moravian-Silesian Region is located in the most eastern part of the Czech Republic. From Prague its about 300 km as the crow flies. By converting this figure to a transportation time, it is only 1 hour by air, 3 hours by rail and 4 hours by road. If you look at the whole of Europe, the region is situated between the Austrian Vienna, Polish Upper-Silesian agglomeration and Slovak Bratislava.
