VŠB – Technical University of Ostrava was founded in 1849, has 20,000 students studying at the bachelor’s master’s and PhD levels, including 1400 from abroad, and conducts world class education and research in the various fields of engineering, IT, nanotechnology and economics. Ostrava has long been a hub of major industry in central Europe, and study and research at VŠB-TUO are informed by historically close ties with major international companies, as well as by joint research and mobility programmes with university partners the world over. Today the University employs the long built expertise in order to provide high quality education to students, conducting basic and applied research, as well as in being a trusted consulting and research partner to a wide variety of industries. Education and research at the University are organized into six key areas: • Raw materials, energy and environmental science • Computational sciences and information technologies • New materials, structures and technologies • Modern engineering • Safety technologies • Modelling of economical and financial processes Of the 124 accredited study programmes, 77 are available in a foreign language, including joint and double degree programmes. While the quality of study programmes is of a high standard, tuition fees and living expenses are relatively quite low, creating excellent value for the education offered at VŠB-TUO. This is reflected by the rapidly growing number of foreign students in Ostrava, including an increasing number from China.
