1. 3 Inbound Tourism Results of the Inbound Tourism survey show that 24.7 million foreign visitors arrived to the Czech Republic in 2013, of which 9.7 million were foreign tourists (39.1%), 12.7 million same-day visitors (51.6%), and 2.3 million visitors in transit (9.3%). Compared to 2012, the total number of tourism participants increased by 560,000 (+2.3%), of which over 170,000 can be attributed to foreign tourists, 388,000 to same-day visitors, while visitors in transit showed similar trend like in the previous year. Estimates suggest that in 2013, foreign visitors spent a total of CZK 180 billion in connection with their stay in the Czech Republic: Of which CZK 76 billion was spent by tourism participants prior to their stay (42%) and CZK 104 billion during their stay (58%); Of which same-day visitors spent CZK 18.3 billion (11.2%), foreign tourists CZK 157.4 billion (87.4%), and visitors in transit CZK 2.5 billion (1.4%). Compared to 2012, the total expenditures by tourism participants rose by 15%. Survey background The Ministry of Regional Development commissions a survey whose purpose is to determine the total estimated number of foreign visitors to the Czech Republic, and their breakdown to tourists, same-day visitors, and visitors in transit; and to outline their characteristics including the amount and structure of their expenditures. The survey is one of the main sources of data for regular compilation of the demand side of the Tourism Satellite Account of the Czech Republic. Its outcomes are published on a quarterly basis. Survey methodology This quantitative quarterly survey takes the form of a face-to-face interview with foreign visitors as they leave the Czech Republic; printed questionnaires are used. The interviews take place at suitable locations close to selected border crossings: train stations, Václav Havel Airport in Prague, and other smaller international airports. Respondents are selected randomly. The interviews are distributed in place and time so that the survey can cover all socio-demographic groups of foreign visitors.
